Underwriter The Underwriter is responsible for adjudicating and underwriting a full range of lending solutions, with an emphasis on residential mortgages, in line with established risk appetite, policies, and procedures. This role ensures applications are reviewed accurately and efficiently while maintaining a high standard of service for broker and internal partners. Key responsibilities include evaluating and recommending complex mortgage and loan applications by assessing credit history, collateral, income, and ability to repay. The role requires prudent credit risk analysis in compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements, along with sound decision-making to support portfolio quality. Additional duties include underwriting applications from retail channels and refinancing referrals, structuring deals within guidelines, and communicating decisions with supporting rationale where needed. The successful candidate will also support AML and “Know Your Customer” procedures, work closely with solicitors and funding staff to ensure smooth workflow, and occasionally assist with applicant interviews and file completion. There may also be opportunities to support product promotion, broker education, and team sales initiatives. Qualifications include 5+ years of retail credit adjudication experience in banking, including at least 2+ years in alternative mortgage lending. Post-secondary education and relevant mortgage or lending coursework are required. Strong English communication skills, solid numerical ability, and proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook are essential. Excellent customer service, organization, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach are important.
