This position is responsible for helping protect a commercial property by managing access, observing activity, and responding to safety concerns. Working under general supervision, the security officer helps maintain a secure environment for employees, visitors, and property through regular patrols, access control, and prompt follow-up on incidents.
Key duties include checking interior and exterior areas for signs of unauthorized entry, damage, or other irregularities; responding to alarms and investigating disturbances; and monitoring arrivals and departures to help prevent theft and maintain order. The role also involves documenting daily activity, incident details, and any unusual events in clear written reports. During emergencies, the security officer is expected to notify the appropriate supervisor and contact emergency services when needed.
Additional responsibilities may include answering phones outside normal business hours, providing general information, using screening equipment when required, and checking security or life-safety systems to confirm they are functioning properly. The position may also support building operations during severe weather or other site-specific safety situations.
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with prior security experience in a professional or commercial setting. Candidates should have strong communication skills, sound judgment, a high level of integrity, and the ability to work independently while following established procedures. CPR certification, applicable licensing, and a valid driver’s license may be required.
