Health & Safety Manager
The Health & Safety Manager works collaboratively with departments and employee groups to promote a strong culture of safety across the organization. Reporting to management, this role supports supervisors and managers in the coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive health and safety program.
Key responsibilities include reviewing operating procedures, materials, and equipment conditions to identify workplace hazards and potential risks of injury or occupational illness. The position helps develop and implement practical control measures to reduce risk, minimize loss and liability, and support compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures. The role also assists with incident and safety concern investigations, prepares reports and recommendations, coordinates health and safety projects, and develops and delivers education materials and training as needed. Ergonomic assessments and related recommendations are also part of the role. In partnership with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, the incumbent supports committee operations and may serve as meeting note taker. This position also supports emergency management activities and may serve as backup when required.
Qualifications include a degree, diploma, or certificate in occupational health and/or safety, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A professional designation such as CRSP, ROH, or CIH is an asset. Experience in public sector operations or a unionized environment is also an asset. A valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence is required. Employment is conditional on a satisfactory police information check for designated positions of trust.
