The General Counsel will serve as the legal officer and a strategic partner to the executive leadership team. This role provides comprehensive legal guidance across various operational areas, with an understanding of the unique legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to Indigenous-owned enterprises. The position requires strong legal expertise, sound commercial judgment, and the ability to navigate the complexities of Indigenous governance and corporate law. The General Counsel will identify and manage legal risks, ensure compliance with regulations, and uphold the legal integrity of the organization.
Key responsibilities include providing timely legal advice to senior leadership on matters affecting the organization, assessing and mitigating legal risks, and ensuring operations comply with applicable laws and governance frameworks. The General Counsel will also support governance obligations, draft and negotiate contracts, oversee corporate records, and advise on joint ventures and business acquisitions.
Additionally, the role involves providing legal guidance on Indigenous self-determination and economic reconciliation, managing litigation, and developing strategies for dispute resolution. The General Counsel will establish a robust legal compliance framework and manage relationships with external legal counsel.
Candidates should be a current member in good standing with the Bar in British Columbia, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, and possess expertise in corporate and commercial law, as well as knowledge of Indigenous law and Treaty rights.
